What We Do

What is the Census?

  • Every ten years, the census counts every person living in the United States and the five U.S. territories - citizens and non-citizens.
  • It's the most inclusive civic activity in our country.
  • At least $2,796 per person is allocated by the federal government to Minnesota each year. That's $28,000 for the decade!

Census Schedule

2020

  • April 16 – June 19: Census takers will work on counting everyone by engaging administrators at colleges, senior centers, prisons, and other facilities that house large groups of people.
  • May 27 – August 14: Census takers will interview homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure that no one is left out.
  • December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

2021

  • March 31: By this date, the Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to the states. The 2020 Census results will determine if there is a need to redraw legislative districts.

How do I get counted?

You will not be asked about citizenship

The Supreme Court ruled that the question of citizenship will not be in the 2020 Census. Anyone living in the United States can participate. You count, and you deserve representation.

Your information is kept private and secure

The Census data is federally protected for 72 years. Your answers cannot be shared with your landlord nor your boss.

Answer as many census questions as you feel comfortable. The more complete your census form is, the less likely you are to have a census worker visit your house.
